The Lewisville Morning Rotary Club has a long history of participating in service projects that improve or protect the environment such as our monthly Household Hazardous Waste project with the City of Lewisville. This week our speaker Karen McDaniels will be talking to us about one of her environmental endeavors that not only recycle trash but provide a means of income for the poor. Karen McDaniels worked in Southeast Asian and lived in Jakarta, Indonesia while working for a global company.

Day after day she watched the trash pickers going through her and her neighbors’ garbage looking for anything they could find to sell in order to feed their families.  As she learned more about how trash pickers lived and that picking trash was passed from one generation to the next, she wanted to find a way to break this cycle and offer a way out of poverty for these families.
In 2013 Karen met Retno Hapsari, an Indonesian woman and General Manager of XSProject, an organization  helping trash picker families living at the Cirendeu open garbage dump in South Jakarta. Together they expanded the services to the Cirendeu community to help educate more trash picker and other children of poverty.
Karen has introduced XSProject’s work in the US at conferences, trade shows and community events .  Sales of the products go directly back to XSProject to help pay for the education programs, community needs, the organic farm and the women’s miro-finance programs supported by the organization. She also manages all the fund raising programs and donations.
XSProject Reguna Kreasi, Inc. in a 501(c)-3 registered in Texas.
