Our club and its members will be participating in opening ceremonies May 2nd with a Flag Retirement Ceremony. Members will also be erecting flags at the site, volunteer with other community groups to erect the and disassemble the wall, volunteer with other community groups to provide support and security during the event and provide a 2nd Flag Retirement Ceremony on Sunday May 5th.

The following information is shared from the City of Lewisville website including the volunteer opportunities at the bottom of the page:

The traveling exhibit honors the more than 3 million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and it bears the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

The Wall That Heals exhibit will be open to the public 24 hours a day and will be accompanied by the Mobile Education Center. Lewisville is one of three Texas tour stops in 2019 for The Wall That Heals, but it is the only North Texas tour stop.

The three-quarter scale Wall replica is made up of 140 numbered panels and stands 375 feet long and 7.5 feet tall. Like the original Memorial, The Wall That Heals is erected in a chevron-shape and visitors can do name rubbings of individual service member’s names on The Wall.

The Mobile Education Center is the 53-foot trailer that carries The Wall That Heals around the country. The exterior of the trailer features a timeline of “The War and The Wall” and provides additional information about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Additional exhibits give visitors a better understanding of the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the collection of items left at The Wall.

To learn more about The Wall That Heals, please visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) website. The VVMF is the nonprofit organization that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall) in Washington, D.C. in 1982. VVMF continues to lead the way in paying tribute to our nation’s Vietnam veterans and their families.
