It has been a busy week for those Lewisville Morning Rotary Club members that volunteered to deliver dictionaries to 3rd graders in the 11 Title I elementary schools in Lewisville ISD.
Pictured here are members of the 3rd grade classes at Camey Elementary School in The Colony.

Dictionaries were delivered to Lakeland ES, Central ES, Garden Ridge ES & Vickery ES, Camey ES, Etheridge ES & Morningside ES, Independence ES, Creekside ES & Degan ES.

So, in today's digital world, why does Lewisville ES use it's funds and matching grant funds from the Rotary Foundation to purchase dictionaries? Because our teachers tell us that the good old Webster Dictionary is still one of the best tools for teaching children to read and write. There is something about looking up a word, going through the pages and finding the word you need among all the other words that teaches a child in a way that Googling a word can not. In addition, the dictionary we purchase for these children can be used during their various state testing episodes. The teachers also tell us that for many of these Title I students, the dictionary is the only book they own and many use the tool well into their latter years of study. Educators tell us that third grade is a key year for students academic career. From kindergarten through 3rd grade, students are learning to read. From 4th grade forward, students are reading to learn.
