Rotary District 5790 notified us that they have approved a $2,500 matching grant to fund our Reading Awards Project. Your Rotary Foundation donations are at work on this badly needed project in our schools.
During the recent pandemic the student reading skills have declined. In order to create incentives for students to participate in reading skills improvement programs, the Lewisville Morning Rotary Club is providing an awards program. At the end of the school year, one boy and one girl in each grade level (K through 5) will receive a new bike. In addition, the 5 top students in each classroom as determined by their teachers, will receive a "goody bag" filled with a book, a bookmark, small trinkets and candies in a formal recognition program at the end of the school year.
Students winning the bikes will be chosen by teachers at each grade level. Criteria to be established by the teachers but will focus on those students who worked the hardest in the reading programs and showed the greatest improvement in reading skills.
For this matching grant, Lewisville Morning Rotary is providing $1,250 and Rotary District 5790 is matching those funds with $1,250 for a total of $2,500. Our goal is to purchase the bikes as soon as possible so that they can be displayed in the school cafeteria as a reminder to students to continue working on their reading skills so they can be eligible to win a bike at the end of the year.
This is the second matching grant our club has received this year. We are in process of purchasing 900 plus dictionaries of 3rd graders at 11 LISD schools. The dictionaries will be distributed to the 11 school 3rd grade class rooms starting in January of 2023.
