Past District Governor Mary Ann McDuff made the surprising announcement this morning that the Lewisville Morning Rotary club had received the Rotary International Significant Achievement Award for it's monthly Household Hazardous Waste project.

The award is a culmination of 18 years of service to the Lewisville residents. The project is the brainchild of Charter President Howard O'Neal and recently retired city of Lewisville services manager Lisa Weaver and has since been carried on by Project Chairman Todd Taylor.

On the 2nd Saturday of every month members of the Lewisville Morning Rotary Club partner with Lewisville City employees to remove household hazardous waste that should not be disposed in land fills or sewers from the vehicles of Lewisville residents. Wastes such as paint, thinner, lubricants, cooling oil, pesticides, herbicides, florescent lamps and electronics such as computers, televisions etc are removed, categorized by type, packaged and shipped to city vendors that either recycle the byproducts, safely use as fuel or dispose in a environmentally safe manner.

The program has grown to a monthly program where LMR members volunteer monthly. Howard has led us to serving approximately 20,000 vehicles and collecting 2 million pounds of materials on 144 collection days since it's inception. Over the years Lewisville Morning Rotary members have volunteered over 3,500 hours on this ongoing project.
