Throughout history armies and groups have used symbols and objects to identify themselves. Some used shields and weapons. Later, colored fabrics evolved into what we know as flags.
Early Flags
1. Colonial Flag used by Colonies, 2. Bunker Hill Flag, 3. Pike Free Flag used by Navy, 4. Rattlesnake Flag used early in Revolutionary war, 5. First National Flag (1776) prior to Declaration of Independence, 6. Present Star Spangled Banner
General George Washington had several flags. One he introduced to the troops in Cambridge. Later he had a battle flag specially recognized as used at Valley Forge.
When the Constitution was approved, Washington felt the country was ready and in need of a flag; a symbol to show unity for the thirteen colonies and to let all know we are now an independent nation.
The story of Washington’s meeting with Betsy Ross stands prominent in our history. We are pleased that you are a subscriber to the Lewisville Morning Rotary Clubs’ “flag subscription program. The program is two fold. First it provides funds that our Rotary Club can use to the benefit of our communities. It also serves to remind the community of our history; of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to preserve a magnificent heritage for betterment of life and nation.
