On October 1, 1962, then President John F. Kennedy signed a bill into law that May 15th be designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day as an observance in the United States that pays tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. It is celebrated May 15th of each year.
In 1994, Bill Clinton made and amendment through Public Law 103-322 that directed the United States flag be flown at half mast on May 15.
According to a proclamation by George W. Bush in 2002,"Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, State, and Federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication. These observances also remind us of the ongoing need to be vigilant against all forms of crime, especially to acts of extreme violence and terrorism."
For the Lewisville Area Flags, on this solemn occasion, some of our subscribers have fastened a black bow to the staff just beneath the flag which is perfectly acceptable. Subscribers may wish to leave the bow attached for all of Peace Officers week. This year, the week will be observed Sunday, May 10 through Saturday, May 16th.
