Flag Subscription News
The Lewisville Morning Rotary Club partners with Scout Troop 9168 to deliver and pick-up flags during the holidays. Veterans Day is a national holiday celebrated every year on November 11, 2020.

In this edition of the Flag Subscription Newsletter, we would like to share some interesting facts about how this national holiday came to be.
How Veterans Day became a national holiday
What was originally known as Armistice Day began in 1919, with President Woodrow Wilson’s proclamation of a day to be “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory.”

The name was change in 1954, when President Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name of the federal holiday to Veterans Day, acknowledging millions of World War II and Korean War veterans in addition to those of World War I. “On that day,” Eisenhower said, “let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom.”

Congress changed the date of observance to the fourth Monday in October in 1971. however, state legislatures, veterans groups and the American people urged a return to the original November 11th date, and in 1975, President Ford signed legislation authorizing the change. In 1978, the nation’s Veterans Day observance reverted to Nov. 11.

According to Lewisville Rotary Member and Charter Rep. Jeff Lighton, BSA Troop 9168 is an extremely busy troop. Aside from the customary scouting activities, they also perform a number of service projects throughout Lewisville. For example:

Troop is coming along side Veterans Produce at the community garden in Lewisville to help with hydroponic raising of vegetables for the Salvation Army here in town.

Upcoming events of interest is the Old Hall Cemetery clean up in November and the Wreaths Across America project on December 19th.

BSA Troop 9168 is very proud of one of their scouts that is working on an Eagle Scout project for Old Hall Cemetery that will be completed in December.
