COLUMBUS DAY
There is a long list of “Federal Holidays”. The holidays most recognized are the ones for which Federal Employees receive a “Paid Day off”.
Ten days are the most recognized. These are days when we recognize individuals; Days when we celebrate traditions and days when we honor those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
When Columbus Day was designated an official holiday in 1937, we celebrated on the actual date of his birthday, October 12. Congress later moved many holidays to Monday in order to give workers long weekends. It also means there are less interruptions in the workweek.
On Monday, October 14,2019 our nation will celebrate Columbus Day. Do you remember learning about Christopher Columbus in School? Perhaps what you learned is now way back in your memory. The Lewisville Morning Rotary suggests you might want to refresh your memory. It was Columbus with a crew of ninety men in three small ships who sailed across the Atlantic in 1492. A journey that took about sixty days; one way.
Pennant of the Santa Maria
Columbus carried several flags on his journey. The Lions and Castles flag and a flag now known as the Columbus Flag. There are others connected with Columbus. They include a Pennant of the Santa Maria, The Spain Flag, Italian Flag and the Papal Flag.

The U.S. or American flag is perhaps the most widely recognized flag in the world.
Although we see it every day, we suggest taking a few extra minutes each holiday to give thanks and remember all our flag stands for. Thank you for your support of this program and your demonstration of all we as a nation stand for.
